History

The Brainerd United Way originated with Penny Johnson, the first Executive Director, in 1969. She felt that Brainerd residents and businesses should join forces to raise money for nonprofit agencies that were helping those in need. The first drive’s goal was set and achieved at $45,000.

In 1995, the Brainerd United Way became United Way of Crow Wing and Southern Cass Counties to accommodate for changes and growth in the Brainerd Lakes Area.

In 2003, United Way of America introduced the "What Matters" brand advertising campaign. The message was clear: Investing in the United Way is the best way to make a difference in the community because United Way is focused on what matters most: results.

In 2008, United Way of America launched the "Live United" advertising brand, simplifying its national focus to three areas: education, income, and health – the building blocks for a good life. We all win when children succeed in school, when families are financially stable, and when people have good health. That's what it means to Live United.
