Frequently Asked Questions
What's going on with United Way?
In the past, we've been known for being an efficient fundraiser and a wise
steward of donors' resources. But donors and community leaders have told us
they need more from us in order to make this area the best region in the
country. So, we've expanded our work to:
-
Identify emerging issues in people's lives throughout the area
-
Implement comprehensive strategies to address the most critical issues
-
Pursue unique partnerships to solve those issues and fill critical gaps in new
ways
-
Ensure coordination and eliminate duplication of efforts to get the most out of
the limited resources available
Why should I give to United Way instead of just giving directly to
organizations?
United Way connects your gift to the most critical issues. By giving to United
Way, you are assured that your dollars are working their hardest to achieve
measurable results in this area.
If you give directly to an organization, we can only assure you that your gift
gets to the non-profit you choose. We don't have any way to ensure that the
dollars are being used effectively to address the most critical issues,
nor that they are achieving results.
How much of my money goes to people who need it?
Every dollar is used wisely by United Way. We have been named as one of the
most effective stewards of your money by the premier evaluator of nonprofits,
Charity Navigator. They have awarded us the highest rating of 4-stars, putting
us in the top quartile of all organizations reviewed for effectiveness and
efficiency.
Additional Information
While national guidelines allow up to 30% of people's gifts to be used for
marketing and administrative expenses, United Way only spends up to 12% on
these expenses.
What issues does United Way address?
United Way addresses the most critical issues affective human lives. We focus
in three key areas:
-
Nurturing Children and Families
-
Meeting Basic Needs
-
Supporting Health and Independence
Should I designate my contribution or not?
It is up to you. However, most people do not choose to designate. They tell us
they appreciate that United Way is able to identify the most critical issues
and then determine the programs and/or partnerships that are most effective at
solving these issues. As a result, the majority of people allow United Way to
determine where their dollars should be invested.
Also, given the complexity of the issues, the solutions are multi-faceted and
addressed by many organizations working together. If you designate to one
particular organization, you money will only be used to solve part of the issue
- not the whole issue - making it potentially less effective.
Who decides what happens to my money?
A team of knowledgeable volunteers and experienced United Way employees
determines how to invest your money in the community. These decisions are based
on a thorough understanding of the issues, the resources available and the best
organizations to address the issues.
What types of partnerships does United Way form?
United Way works with a wide array of people and organizations to address the
most critical needs. We tap into:
-
Thousands of excellent non-profits
-
A strong business community
-
Passionate community leaders and
-
Committed citizens
